Build a safety net on any salary
Why money for surprises comes first, how much to aim for, and how to get there a little at a time.
A safety net is the money that stops a bad week from becoming a bad year. It pays for the car repair, the urgent flight home or the month between jobs, so you do not have to borrow at the worst moment.
How much to aim for
Start with one month of your essential spending: rent, food, school, transport, bills and what you send home. Then build towards three months, or six if your income changes a lot or your visa depends on your job.
Where to keep it
In a separate savings account you do not spend from, ideally one you can reach within a day. Not in investments that can fall in value just when you need them.
How to build it
- 1Pick a small amount you can put aside every payday, even if it feels too small.
- 2Move it on payday, before you start spending.
- 3Add anything unexpected: a bonus, a refund, a gift.
- 4If you use it, refill it before starting new goals.
